Cake Smashes - not just for 1 year olds!

People often think that cake smashes are only meant for 1 year olds. To mark the milestone birthday celebrate in style by placing a cake in front of a 1 year old and see what ensues, the fun, the madness, the mayhem. Snap away and capture the cuteness and the subsequent sugar rush. But why just for 1 year olds. Who said the fun can’t be the same with a toddler?

Having not done a cake smash for a my little girl for her first birthday, when I started photographing them for other people I thought why not do it with her now as a 2 and a half year and see what happens.

She was excited for her cake smash, helping me get the room ready and decorating the cake which created as much mess as the actual cake smash itself - a simple £3.50 cake from Morrisons with extra sprinkles added did just the trick. The best light in our house is in our dinning room which isn’t a huge space but we made it work and helped prove to myself that I can adapt to a space and work with a given area. As it wasn’t her birthday I decided to set up the background with things that she has had since she was born, or that mean something to us - teddies, blankets, flowers and cushions, all with a meaning and a story.

We had 30 minutes of fun, her needing a little direction and encouragement at times to give things a go (this is naturally her personality) but she had a good time, ate lots of cake and we have photos to treasure.

Ultimately every child is different and no matter what their age its about doing what they are comfortable in doing and enjoying doing in. It can be a real conflict of expectation vs reality as to the actual experience you have on the day and the end result you get but you can offer the opportunity and adapt to the situation. Parenting in general feels like a constant battle of managing your expectations doesn’t it as the reality can be very different…..?

Whether your child is 1, 2, 3 or more if you and they would like to do a cake smash photoshoot, do a cake smash photoshoot. Kids grow, their personalities and interests grow and change too and this is something you want to capture and remember. Having fun, smiling faces, cake, cheekiness and memories to remember and look back on. Cake smashes are certainly not just for one year olds.
