No Prop or Not to Prop

When it comes to newborn photography and newborn photoshoots there are many many different styles out there. For some when they think of newborn photos they think of cute little outfits, little bottoms on show, small hats, sentimental items, props, bonnets and more. For others they think of simplicity, a baby, a blanket and a camera.

The style of your newborn photos is something you should give some consideration. You want to look back on your photos in a year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years and look at them and see your tiny newborn and not be drawn to the background, or props or outfit which you now no longer like, has perhaps become dated or makes you wonder why you chose it.

Keep it personal, keep it timeless, keep it you.

Choose outfits, backdrops and props which mean something to you, remind you of a time, a person, are personal to your story and your child. Try (I know it’s not always easy) to not compare what you want to what others have already done.

A newborn photographer will help guide you through the process,  suggesting things they think will look good based on what you have in mind. Likewise though don’t be afraid to say if you don’t like something, always remember these are your photos. As every photographer will have their own style it’s important to do your research and have conversations with them pre photoshoot to make sure they are the right fit for you and that they can deliver the photos you would like. An honest photographer will tell you if they don’t think they can deliver your vision but as a professional will perhaps offer other suggestions they can do as its equally as important to feel happy, confident and comfortable with your chosen photographer. So have an open mind also as you may just love what they suggest the same if not more.

Do some research, ask for recommendations, make some enquiries. Have a vision, have ideas, have expectations, but at the end of the day keep the focus on your little bundle of joy and capture those newborn memories forever.
